SUMMARY:Fall Buddhist Sangha Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Sangha Retreat – What to Expect\n \nRetreat is a time of meditation and education.  Anytime away from home may be a bit psychologically and emotionally challenging. Sleeping in a new space and a change in physical environment is a challenge many participants will encounter and should be expected.  This retreat will not be like a playful summer camp.  It is a time of training our monkey mind and to grow inner practice.  You will live a similar life as a monk or nun in training. \nRetreats are often held in silence. We have set times for silence and maintain it for that period of time.. During retreat we meditate together several times a day.  Sitting meditation is usually done for 30 minutes.  Walking meditation\, Metta Meditation\, Mindful practice and the mindfulness bell will occur throughout the retreat. Please bring your own meditation cushion or sitting bench if possible\, the Sangha retreat will be large and our supplies are limited.  \nMeal times in the mornings and evenings are casual\,  The  lunch meal is formal and held in silence.  Meals will be vegetarian with dairy and eggs available.  Breakfast and lunch are regular meals.  The evening meal is a piece of fruit\, milk (Soy\, Almond\, Dairy).  If you need additional food – please bring your own food that does not need cooking.  Refrigerator use is available. \nThere is a morning work period and a few breaks throughout the day. The daily schedule will include a dharma talk from a teacher\, interviews with the teacher\, and informal tea at night. \n\nThe wake up bell begins at 5:30 AM\, program starts at 6:00 AM and end around 9 PM\nThe morning work period lasts roughly 60 minutes. SUMMARY:Ullambana / Vu Lan - Day of Remembrance ("Ghost Day")
DESCRIPTION:The Yulanpen Sutra\, also known as the Ullambana Sutra\, is a Mahayana sutra concerning filial piety. (Historic story about a monk who saved his mother).  Join us for our regular Saturday morning service which will include a celebration of this story of compassion.   \nUllambana\, surprisingly\, has multiple stories about its origin. Based on the region where it is celebrated\, people have passed on varying stories about the day. The word ‘Ullambana’ itself is probably derived from the Indian Language of Sanskrit and was translated into Chinese to form ‘Ullambana.’ In India\, you would probably hear people say “Yulanpen Sutra\,” which is in more than one way similar to the Chinese Ullambana. \nThe story behind the day is interesting. The story is of a boy\, Sariputta\, who rescues his mother who is trapped in a life-cycle continuum. Legend has it that Petavatthu\, Sariputta’s mother\, is trapped in the fifth life cycle as a ghost\, unable to come back as a human. To help his mother\, Sariputta builds huts and fills them with food for the needy to eat from as a gesture of his sacrifice. The gods accept his sacrifice and his mother is freed. \nSee https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulanpen_Sutra    \n  \nPhoto credit: By unknown artist(Life time: 19th century) – Original publication: not published Immediate source:http://academic.reed.edu/hellscrolls/scrolls/Aseries/A10/A10c.html\, PD-US\, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=44727949
